Nakshatra calculator

Your nakshatra is the star the Moon stood in at your birth: one of 27, a far finer signature than a zodiac sign. Luna finds yours in seconds, free, before you sign up for anything.

Your birth minute fixes the eastern horizon. It’s what makes your chart yours, not everyone’s born that day.

Luna will use noon. Your Moon, birth star, and dasha timeline stay exact to the day. Only your rising sign and houses need the minute.

What is a nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the sky. Your birth star, or janma nakshatra, is the one the Moon occupied when you were born. It is an older and finer layer than the twelve signs, laid over the same circle of sky.

Two people with the same moon sign usually carry different nakshatras, which is the first clue to how personal this signature is. Each nakshatra divides again into four quarters, called padas, so the map grows finer still. The tradition gives every star its own temperament, its own deity and its own story. That is why a nakshatra reading feels specific where a sun sign feels generic.

How Luna computes it

Luna takes the Moon’s sidereal longitude from the Swiss Ephemeris, accurate to the arc-second, and maps it into the 27 divisions using the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra, so your date and place are usually enough to name your birth star with confidence.

If the Moon crossed from one nakshatra into the next on your birthday, the exact time decides which one is yours, and it also fixes your pada, the quarter within the star that sharpens the reading.

Why it matters in Vedic astrology

The nakshatra is not decoration. It is machinery. Your birth star seeds the vimshottari dasha, the 120-year timing cycle that Vedic astrology runs your life against, so it shapes when your chapters begin and end, not only who you are.

Classical compatibility matching starts from the birth stars of two people, long before it looks at anything else. Your nakshatra is one thread in a much larger weave: one of more than 2,000 points in your full Vedic birth chart.

Questions

Nakshatra questions, answered.

How do I find my nakshatra?

Enter your birth date, place and time in the calculator at the top of this page and Luna places your Moon among the 27 nakshatras in seconds. No sign-up, no credit card, no email needed to see your birth star.

What is a nakshatra?

Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the sky. Your birth star, or janma nakshatra, is the one the Moon occupied when you were born. It is an older and finer system than the 12 zodiac signs.

Do I need my exact birth time to know my nakshatra?

Usually your date and place are enough, because the Moon spends about a day in each nakshatra. If the Moon crossed into a new nakshatra on your birthday, the exact time decides which one is yours, and it also fixes your pada, the quarter within the star.

What does my nakshatra say about me?

Your nakshatra describes your instincts: the temperament underneath your moon sign. It also seeds your vimshottari dasha, the 120-year Vedic timing cycle, so it shapes not just who you are but when the chapters of your life begin and end.

What is the difference between a nakshatra and a zodiac sign?

The zodiac divides the sky into 12 signs of 30 degrees each; the nakshatras divide it into 27 stars of 13 degrees 20 minutes. Two people with the same moon sign usually have different nakshatras, which is why Vedic astrologers treat the birth star as the sharper signature.
