What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, called the lagna in Vedic astrology, is the sign that was climbing the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It changes roughly every two hours as the Earth turns, faster than any planet moves, which is why two people born on the same day in the same city can carry different rising signs.
The lagna sets your first house and anchors all twelve houses of your chart. It shapes how you move through the world and how people read you before you say a word. It is distinct from your sun sign and from your moon sign: those describe your core and your inner life, while the rising sign describes your approach.
How Luna computes it
A rising sign needs your date, your time and your place, all three, which is why the form asks for the minute. Luna resolves your city to its coordinates and its historical timezone, then computes the horizon with the Swiss Ephemeris, accurate to the arc-second.
A few minutes of clock time shift the rising degree, and a couple of hours can move it into the next sign entirely. Once the lagna is fixed, all twelve houses of your chart fall into place in a single stroke, which is why this one field carries more weight than any other on the form.
Why Vedic
The Vedic lagna is measured in the sidereal zodiac, the real current positions of the stars, about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac. So your Vedic rising sign is often one sign earlier than a Western ascendant calculator gives you.
This matters more here than anywhere else, because Vedic astrology counts every house from the lagna. Getting the rising sign right changes the reading of everything built on top of it. It is one of more than 2,000 points in your full Vedic birth chart.

Questions
Rising sign questions, answered.
How do I calculate my rising sign?
You need your birth date, your birth place and your exact birth time. Enter all three in the calculator at the top of this page and Luna computes your Vedic rising sign in seconds. No sign-up, no credit card, no email needed to see it.
Why does my rising sign need my exact birth time?
The rising sign changes roughly every two hours as the Earth turns, faster than any planet moves. A few minutes shifts the degree on the horizon, and a couple of hours can change the sign entirely. It is the one part of your chart that depends on the minute, not just the day.
What if I don't know my birth time?
Luna can't pin down your exact rising sign without a time, but everything built on the Moon still works: your moon sign, your nakshatra and your dasha timeline stay exact to the day. A birth certificate or a parent's memory is usually the fastest way to recover the time.
What does my rising sign mean?
Your rising sign, called the lagna in Vedic astrology, is the sign that was climbing the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It sets your first house and anchors all twelve houses of your chart, and it shapes how you carry yourself and how people first read you.
Why is my Vedic rising sign different from my Western one?
Both use the same horizon and the same math, but Vedic astrology measures against the sidereal zodiac, the real current positions of the stars. That runs about 24 degrees behind the Western tropical zodiac, so your Vedic rising sign is often one sign earlier.
